Let's face it: It's time to get focus and head back to school! I want to share with you some things I wish I knew before I went to college. Now this is just a quick general list, but through this blog I will continue to share things I've learned as an Academic Advisor that can help you have successful college years! Let's Go!!
1. Your GPA matters!!!
During your undergraduate career your GPA is a big part of you. If you are planning to go to graduate school or wish to seek any other post-bacc (Post-Bacc= Post Baccalaureate=after your bachelor's degree) degree you will need a good GPA, (3.0 or higher) for most graduate programs. Your last 60hrs are very important! So keep that GPA up!
2. Get Involved!!
College is a time to build on your social skills and find the things you are most interest in. One great way of doing that is joining campus groups, volunteering, campus ministry, sorority/fraternity or even try out for the band or dance team. Whatever your interests are get involved around campus!!
3. Stay on top of Financial Aid
I know that the Financial Aid Office can be a nightmare at times, but this is so important. Be aware of how much financial aid you are receiving and how much you will need for the year. If you are paying out of pocket make sure you know the deadlines for payments and all fees you are responsible for. READ EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU SIGN and ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand! Remember if you are receiving loans you have to pay them back (so take what you need, even if they offer you more than you need). Remember college is another system- it's about that money, baby, don't get it twisted. You will be dropped from classes if that payment is not in on time.
4. Network! Network! Network!
"When I went to school, I didn't know what "network" meant- I just heard a lot of people say it many times over."- Alyssa Adame. I too was like Alyssa not really knowing the true meaning and value of networking. So what is network? Webster's definition is this: a group of people or organizations that are closely connected and that work with each other. I underlined some key words, when it comes to networking you first have to meet some people, networking is not a solo task. You then have to get to know who they are, networking is about building relationships. Lastly you work together. We all have skills and gifts that makes us unique that we need to share with others. So when you're in the café eating alone, go and chat with the other person sitting alone, you never know who they are and who they know. One year you may not be able to make it home for Thanksgiving, and by building relationships you could be invited by that person to spend the holidays in a new city with their family. Get out there and make those connections!!!
5. Always remember your values and stand on them!
Before you leave for school write down a vision statement for yourself! Write down words that describe the things you value (for example: Faith, Family, Friends, Love and Fun are my values) Hold on to those values and always base your discussion on these things. If it doesn't line up to your values just say no! Here is a quote I love " Excellence is the Standard not the goal."- Pastor Marcus Cosby
6. Have FUN!
College years are some of the best years of your life! A time to explore, meet new people, make mistakes, and learn things about yourself. If you are given the opportunity to Study Abroad take advantage of that opportunity. Of course there are going to be many parities and other social activities on and off campus go have fun but don't let your partying outweigh your academics. The key is balance!! That B word I hope you learn it!! LOL!
7. Get to know your Academic Advisor!!!
This one is important. I tell my students all the time we are here to help you!! We want you to be successful!! Meet with your advisor at least once a semester to make sure you are taking the courses you need!! One of the most important things you need from your advisor is a degree plan! This plan will guide you on courses required for graduation. Always ask for an updated degree plan every time you meet. Courses change and you need to be aware of the changes. Your academics are your responsibility, take it seriously!!!
8. Declare your major by the end of your Sophomore year!
It's okay if you don't know what you want to major in your first year. You may need time to adjust from high school to college that first year and work on your basic core courses. Once you have determined what you have a passion for go ahead and declare your major.
9. Use your school resources!
If you are struggling in classes ask for help and use it! All those extra fees you are paying for these school resources. You are paying for them so go ahead and use them. It's okay to make some mistakes but learn and grow from them. Don't let your grades suffer because of your pride. Get the help you need.
10. GRADUATE!!
That's the end result. Always keep that in mind.
Have a great school year!! Go be great and know that you have a team of people routing for you! Remember you are never alone, use your support system and know that God is always with you.
Your REAL School Days Advisor,
Adrian :-)
